Expiring Maps

The Bing Maps software was turned off by Microsoft on 30 June 2025. This meant I had to remove the maps 'Earthstar Satellite', 'Bing Maps Road' and 'OS via Bing Maps', and the overlay 'Bing traffic'. These are the replacements:

  • Earthstar Satellite has been replaced for now with Google Satellite. We'll see if this proves expensive. The fallback is Mapbox Satellite.
  • I've also added Mapbox Satellite. This is great in urban areas but less so in rural areas.
  • The Bing OS maps have been replaced with Ordnance Survey's own OS maps. They are sharper and more up to date so this is a good improvement.
  • Currently there's no replacement for the traffic overlay.
  • Satellite Spy is still using Earthstar via Azure Maps. This is really expensive and might just about be feasible for the Spy, which has been optimised to only load as few tiles as possible. Unfortunately Azure Maps is too expensive to be able to use Earthstar Satellite as a map.

Restricted Maps

Some maps are restricted to logged-in users. This is because they are not freely available and have usage limits. Allowing public use might exceed these limits.

If restricted maps still exceed their limits then the only way to increase those limits is to pay the map providers. This would mean working out a way to pass the cost on to users.

Restricted maps are:

  • OS DataHub Lesiure
  • OS DataHub Road
